Lancaster Messier makes good money murdering rich women and converting all of their earthly possessions into cash. But when he meets the sexy and alluring Carla, he makes a fundamental occupational mistake--he falls in love.
A Killer's Love is an intense novella about the slippery nature of identity, and includes all the extreme sex, violence, and sick humor you've come to expect from Mike Monson.
Mike Monson is the author of the novel Tussinland, and the novellas What Happens in Reno, and The Scent of New Death. He is the co-publisher of All Due Respect Books. He lives in Modesto, California, where he is employed as a civil litigation paralegal for a noir law firm where he only works on pathetic cases that are doomed to fail.

"A Killer’s Love" is nasty and violent. It is definitely worth a read. I didn’t like it as much as "What Stays in Reno" or "Tussinland," but even a “B” list book by Monson is better than a lot of writers’ “A” list work.A recurring archetype in noir fiction is the remorseless killer, a moral black hole who murders when and where he feels like it. I’m speaking here of characters like Tom Ripley ("The Talented Mr. Ripley" and the rest of the Ripley series), Patricia Highsmith’s murderous con man, or Lou Ford ("The Killer Inside Me"), Jim Thompson’s psychopathic sheriff’s deputy.
Lancaster Messier, the protagonist in Mike Monson’s novella, A Killer’s Love, fits this pattern perfectly. Like Ford, Messier is a nonpareil sexual predator, vicious enough to use violence to score with both male and female victims; But, like Ripley, he is a thief and scammer who is always looking for a chance to profit from victims with valuable worth stealing. The name of this 63-page novel, in fact, is a tip of the hat to Thompson and his famous character, Ford.
Monson specializes in tales about people who have few redeeming qualities. His characters run the gamut of human amorality: grifters, cough syrup junkies, professional bank robbers, dope dealers, murderers, men and women who cheat on their mates.
"A Killer’s Love" fits the pattern perfectly. The one thing they have in common is that all of them are transgressive: even the victims have violated normal ethical codes. To describe the plot in any detail would spoil it. Instead, simply know that the story culminates in a twist ending that will probably surprise the average reader.

A Killer Love edition by Mike Monson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Mike Monson has done it again. The man is a noir genius. He published great noir through All Due Respect and he writes some of their better releases. His latest, A Killer’s Love, is a novella that fires on all cylinders and is an excellent example of why some the best noir fiction (maybe the best?) is being published by ADR.
Lancaster Messier is a grifter; he scours his surroundings looking to find his next meal ticket. He is an equal opportunist when it comes to seeking victims … young, old, male, female … the only thing that matters is if the victim has something that he desires. In other words, he is the perfect main character for an ADR book.
This novella is a fast-paced, quick read that follows Messier as he leaves victims in his wake and settles in with Carla, who may be the dame who finally tames him. Life with Carla is seemingly perfect; high end food, great booze, high-grade medical marijuana, and a woman who asks no questions about the past and has no worries about the future. But all that changes with a simple knock on Carla’s front door …
Messier is an interesting character. His emotions run volatile and we see him on opposite ends of the spectrum. One minute he is a cold-blooded killer and the next he is a benevolent benefactor for those in need. This strange dichotomy allows us to see a nice amount of depth within him as a character, something that can be lacking in quick paced novellas. Monson does a great job fleshing Messier out and hooking the reader and creating a desire to see what Messier will attempt next.
Monson’s writings often seem to remind me of the Hard Case Crime type of stories; true to the plots of old noir classics. His books usually contain dames, hoods, guns, and double-crossing swerves. He has quickly become a man of relevance in noir publishing and I have come to learn that if he is involved in some manner of a book being published, the book will likely be kicking serious ass.
Highly Recommended.
If you are fan of twisted, dark noir you must read A Killer's Love. The whole thing from start to finish is a punch right to the gut...quite possibly the best noir novella ever written!
Full of surprises and Mike Monson's usual attention to detail in location setting. I enjoyed this sick and bloody debauchery taking place in oceanfront Orange County with familiar street names and lifestyle characteristics. People ripe for the taking.
Love, in the hands of Mike Monson, is a complicated thing. It's a violent and unpredictable thing. And it's bloody.
This novella is a fast read that wastes no time getting into the action. Lancaster Messier is an interesting character who meets his match in the form of an Orange County socialite named Carla. If I say any more than that, I might ruin the twists in this short, sharp tale. Read it for yourself. You won't be disappointed at all.
This is the kind of book you may want to shower after reading, but really don’t the most fun things require some cleansing afterwards? It is certainly dark (the protagonist is an amoral killer after all) and twisted, but at times genuinely funny and never boring or predictable. If you like this kind of thing (and you damn well should) you cannot do any better than A Killer’s Love.
Mike Monson started at the top of noir and just keeps getting better. His latest, A Killer's Love, is everything you would expect and quite a bit more. Lancaster Messier is in fact a killer--a killer who may well have met his match. He can assume an identity in an instant. You don't quite know when he is himself or some persona he has deftly assumed. How he reacts when he does not feel in control is what drives this story. But what happens when he cannot control his own feelings? Don't expect a Hollywood story arc. Don't expect a predictable story line. Expect to be shocked, surprised, and entertained at every turn. If you've read Monson before, you know what to expect--the gritty, gory, sexy unexpected. It's rich stuff. This book is about a killer. It's about love. And it's all Monson at his very best. I can only hope that his fingertips are burning up the keyboard as he is writing his next book. Monson always has a place reserved at the top of my to be read list. Don't miss A Killer's Love.
