I read this book years ago when a friend introduced me to Janette Oke. I saw this book come up recently as free for Kindle and decided to read it again. I think I picked up more on some of the subtle points of the story this time around than I did years ago.The point of the story seems to be that while most of us expect love to come in with a bang or a frisson of excitement, it does not always do that. Sometimes it sneaks up on you, slowly and steadily, while you work toward common goals with someone else.
Since this is set during the westward expansion, when a man and a woman wanted to live together, they pretty much had to get married. When Marty's husband dies suddenly, leaving her pregnant, a local widower (Clark) who has a young daughter proposes that they get married since the preacher is leaving on his traveling rounds. This will give him a mother for his daughter. It also gives Marty a home for the upcoming winter since no transportation going east is likely until the next Spring. Over time, Marty and Clark discover that they do love each other.

A sweet story set in the old West with mild Christian themes. I liked all of the characters and they were fairly well developed. I liked the story very much but was distracted by the slang "I'm afeared that weil jest havta make do like". That drove me crazy and instead of adding to the story, it took away from it.
Despite that I'd recommend it.
Though an adult novel, I first read this as a 12 year old, looking for something good to read on my mother's shelf. In many ways, this book (and series) are the background for rating all Christian fiction I read.
Marty's story is not predictable. Losing her husband on the wagon train headed west, she finds herself alone and pregnant in a new land. Clark Davis comes to her with an offer marry me (in name only) and take care of my 2 year old daughter, and I'll take care of you and pay for you to return to your family back east in the spring, if you'll take my daughter with you. Hence the story title--will a marriage of convenience between two grief-stricken people bloom into more?
Great read, steady pace, deeper thought as it explores grief and love. Read it!
Loved the movie, which wisely turned the terrible grammar used in the book, into Marty teaching Missy correct English. The book has "heart" and a good story line but reading through the grammar was painful and nearly stopped me from plowing through it. The worst was "iffen". I'm seventy, traveled, educated and I have never ever seen this in print or heard it spoken. But, because I had seen the movie I assigned those personalities to the characters in the book and am glad I read it.
One of the fines crossover stories every written, LOVE COMES SOFTLY has tremendous appeal and an inspiring message for readers of every age, and every life situation. It is a story about the enduring power of faith and love, and the ability to heal and survive even the most devastating losses. Many other reviews detail the plot of this story, so I will make a few other points. Author Janette Oke, humbled by the enormous response she received to her story and characters, continued to write of Marty and Clark and their family until both of the original main characters were into ripe, old age. Janette said in an interview that she simply did not want to see Clark and Marty die, so she stopped weaving their family tale after book 12 (see series order below).
All of the stories are wonderful, but in my opinion, books one through four are superior, and the first book, LOVE COMES SOFTLY, is outstanding.
IMPORTANT NOTE Ms. Oke REVISED her series in 2003, to reflect slightly more modern vocabulary and context, in order to increase reading comprehension for those who do not know vernacular and colloquialisms of the mid-nineteenth century pioneer era. While the revisions certainly make the story more accessible to many, I feel that part of the charm and authenticity present in the original 1979 version have been a bit reduced. I was able to find a copy of the original 1979 release, and enjoyed this version a bit more. For the average reader, the story will not suffer; history and period piece buffs may want to try to find the original. Ms. Oke revised a number of the titles in the series as she saw fit, again only for vocabulary and comprehension, not for content.
Whether you are a Christian or historical fiction fan, a reader of romance or a strong female protagonist fan, or if you simply enjoy an honest, thoughtful, character-driven story, LOVE COMES SOFTLY will not disappoint. With a plotline that catches the reader's attention from the first sentence, this simply spun, authentic, beautifully voiced story rings with sincerity and pathos, and cannot fail to touch the heart of even the most taciturn reader. Read it yourself, read it with your children, recommend it to your parents or your book group or your church group. Just read it!

I've read the book and seen the movie many times! I've been entertained and encouraged each time!
My life mirrors the book in a way. I was the Christian from Oklahoma who met and fell very quickly in love with a young man from New Jersey. He did not have a clue what being a Christian meant! My family prayed fervently. In a letter he wrote to me he asked why I couldn't just accept and love him as he was without becoming a Christian. My reply was that without realizing it much of what he loved about me was Christ in my heart. I wanted a future with someone who would be praying along with me when our children were sick, when finances were hard and when we argued - yes I was sure there would be arguments as we were both pretty hard headed!! Slowly and softly God's love moved into his heart. His life, his heart was changed!! We married and he became a preacher telling anyone who would listen how he was loved by a wonderful Savior and they could be too! He passed away 12 years ago. I miss him terribly but I know where he is and that some day we'll be together again.
