This is the fourth novel that I have read by Amitav Ghosh and I remain astounded by his intelligence and his mastery of language. This book takes place in a part of India that I had previously known nothing about. The descriptions of the tidal environment, its history, and its inhabitants, both human and animal, are simply stunning. I live on the water and see dolphins every day. I never knew river dolphins existed before reading this book. Each time I read one of Amitav Ghosh' books, I learn not just one thing, but many things. I highly recommend Hungry Tide to anyone with an adventuresome spirit, a love of animals and an appreciation of beautiful writing.

Somewhat engaging. Wanted to get to know the characters better. End was very abrupt. Did not feel much empathy for the characters from the writing. Interesting but want more from a read.
I am an Amitov Ghosh fan. I had finished his trilogy but hadn't had enough!
The Hungry Tide is true to Ghosh's rich writing style and his thorough research. Not only does he paint a vivid picture but I always learn so much!
I love all of Amitav's books. This one taught me so much about the mangroves and the effects of climate change on islands and the effects that climate change will have on people's everyday lives. Very descriptive, as always.
This book, like all of the others I have read by Ghosh is a stunning work of fiction. It is mystical, suspense full and deeply thought provoking . Though I did not want it to end I could not compel myself to stop reading.
This book has some unusual characters representing several cultures and social milieu. Life in a unique Indian ecological niche and the subculture, flora and fauna that populate the mangrove forests and islands of southeast India provide the fascinating context to an unusual love story and adventure.
The tide country setting is as much a character as any human in this thought-provoking tale of human and nature interaction --- not just human and nature, but human and human as well as nature and nature. I read it in South Florida, gazing over mangroves that echoed the setting of a story. A different sort of writing than I'm used to, but the characters were largely believable. The suggestion of romance added nothing and could have been omitted.
I knew nothing of this author until a friend mentioned that I might enjoy this well crafted description of an exotic locale and people......all woven together with a vivid description of the flora, fauna, geology, meteorology of the largest island and river delta in the world. I am a botanist by training and greatly enjoyed the way that respect for the natural world was thematic throughout. Add to this a love story, life and death situations, excellent character development and your time spent is well rewarded.
