This was one of the few that took a while to get released because of its content. I hadn't been able to read it years ago so I bought when it became available. Since it's Tintin's first adventure it can be a little dull at times, but he beats up a lot of bad guys in this one! You can certainly tell the translator was British from the speech, makes it more enjoyable for me honestly. Only downside is since it's a compilation of Hergé's news comic strips it gets read very fast, I finished in maybe 15 minutes or so. Since this is the very first of Tintin's adventures It's also a slightly different art style from Hergé's more modern Tintin books and is in black and white instead of color.

I became acquainted with Tintin in second grade, when I discovered a shelf of Children's Digests which ran abridged, black-and-white excerpts of his adventures. The digests were in no particular order, so I found myself reading, for example, a few pages of "The Black Island," then a smattering of "Tintin in the Picaros" followed by the ending of "Cigars of the Pharaohs."
It didn't matter that the bits were all out of sequence and context, I loved Herge's characters and stories. Recently, a couple of decades later, I started recollecting the complete Tintin adventures and stumbled onto "The Tintin Companion" in a local bookstore. It was shrinkwrapped but I took a chance and bought it anyway.
It was definitely worth it. This book gives a great history of Herge and his career and work. It also goes into detail about each of the stories and the inspirations behind the illustrations.
An extremely beautiful, enlightening, well-put-together book. Fans will love it.
Tintin is my childhood hero and this is pure nostalgia ) As far as the book goes, the print is of high quality and the text is at a large enough font that it is easy to read. This story though has certain aspects that might not be suitable for a small child (firing squad - I had a hard time explaining what that is).
"Tintin in the Land of the Soviets" was Belgian artist and storyteller Herge's first adventure for his cartoon hero Tintin, published in 1929. In the story, Tintin, a young Belgian reporter, is dispatched by his newspaper editor to document the goings-on in a new and chaotic Soviet Union. Accompanied by his faithful fox terrier Snowy, Tintin finds the shattered country under the thumb of a collection of murderous Communist secret police thugs. Forced to go on the run, Tintin and Snowy survive one death-defying situation after another before finally escaping.

"Tintin in the Land of the Soviets" is drawn in black and white and much longer than the standard adventures that came later. The artwork is rather primitive; the storyline is a series of cliff-hangers mingled with fierce satire of the then-Soviet Union, and lacks the meticulous plots of later adventures. Snowy plays a prominent role as commentator and rescuer of Tintin. Tintin himself is an unfinished character, although the resourcefullness and bravery of the mature Tintin are already apparent.

Perhaps alone among the Tintin adventures, Herge never went back to update the artwork and story. Michael Farr, author of "Tintin The Complete Companion", suggests Herge was embarrassed by the quality of this first effort. Nevertheless, "Tintin in the Land of the Soviets" is highly recommended to diehard Tintin fans of all ages, who will find this first adventure an interesting introduction to the early Tintin.
I read all the Tintin books when I was young. I found them very funny and full of adventures in foreign countries. When my children were around 8-10 years old, I introduced them to Tintin. Now I have an 8 year old grandson and I bought him all the Tintin books. He loves them! Tintin and his faithful dog Snowy are always chasing the bad guys and discovering dastardly plots. Tintin is a journalist and travels all over the world. His friend, Captain Haddock, is a hilarious character with a very low boiling point. Then there is Processor Calculus and assorted other characters that populate the books and keep the plot moving at a fast pace. The drawings of the books are appealing in their simplicity and the stories have an ageless quality that work well even in 2013. Highly recommend these books for the young and the young at heart!
In the Land of the Soviets is the first Tintin adventure, one that I'd recommend to any fans of Tintin. The story wasn't all that cohesive and was truly just a series of Tintin evading the police and beating up Communists, and the art by Hergé is very different than subsequent volumes of Tintin's adventures, but it was still a fun read and it was clear Hergé was using this first comic to detail the evils of Communism. I'm glad I was able to pick this up! Now to find Tintin in the Congo...
